How to get monetized on X: a step-by-step plan

Getting paid on X in 2026 comes down to two numbers, 500 verified followers and 500,000 verified impressions in 90 days, plus content X accepts as original. Here is a plan that respects the rules.

Step 1: Get the account basics right

These cost little or nothing and are required before you can apply:

  • An active Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business subscription. Premium ($8/month on the web in the US) is the cheapest plan that qualifies.
  • A complete profile: display name, bio, profile photo and header image.
  • A verified email and two-factor authentication.
  • An account at least 3 months old, you're 18 or older, and you're based in a supported country.

Step 2: Do the math on your target

500,000 verified impressions over 90 days is about 5,600 a day, from verified users, in the Home Timeline, on posts rather than replies. Look at your recent posts in X Analytics and estimate what share of your views come from verified accounts. If it's around 20%, you need roughly 28,000 total impressions a day on your own posts.

Then check your verified followers in Creator Studio. If you're far below 500, that's the number to work on first: verified followers are also the people most likely to produce verified impressions.

Step 3: Post work that is clearly yours

Original Content Rewards pays only for original content, and X reviews it. What works:

  • Analysis and commentary that adds something: explain a story, add context, disagree with evidence. X says commentary with real perspective counts as original.
  • Threads and Articles where you teach something you know from experience.
  • Your own photos, video and graphics. If you use someone else's clip, your contribution has to be the main value, not a caption on top.

What doesn't: reposting viral clips, "BREAKING" headline aggregation, screenshots of other people's posts, and content copied from other platforms. These earn nothing under the new rules, and a feed full of them can get your application declined.

Step 4: Grow reach the way the feed rewards it

X published the code of its For You feed on GitHub (xai-org/x-algorithm). It shows a model predicting how likely each viewer is to like, reply, repost, share, dwell on or click your post, and how likely they are to mute, block, report or mark it "not interested". A post's score is a weighted sum of those predictions. Practical takeaways:

  • Make people stop and read. Dwell time and clicks are signals, so clear, specific first lines beat vague hooks.
  • Avoid what annoys people. Predicted mutes, blocks and reports count against a post.
  • Post a few strong posts rather than a flood. Repeated posts from the same author in one feed are scored down.
  • New authors get help. The code includes a boost for authors whose impressions are below a threshold.

Step 5: Use replies to find your audience

Replies don't count toward the impressions requirement, but thoughtful replies under larger accounts in your niche are how many creators gain their first thousand followers. Aim to be the most useful reply, not the fastest.

Step 6: Stay inside the rules

  • No engagement bait: X bans repeatedly telling people to like, reply, bookmark, follow or repost.
  • No bought or automated engagement: bots, engagement pods run by tools, and auto-posting can get you removed.
  • No misleading content: posts with a helpful Community Note are ineligible for payouts.
  • Label AI video of armed conflict: skipping the disclosure means a 90-day payout suspension.
  • No "how to get paid on X" coaching spam: content focused only on monetization coaching is ineligible.

Step 7: Apply, then set up payouts

  1. Check your status

Creator Studio → Original Content Rewards shows each requirement. Our eligibility checker shows the gap in plain numbers.

  2. Apply

X reviews the application and notifies you. If it's declined, appeal once; if the appeal fails, reapply after 42 days.

  3. Connect payouts

ID verification, then X Money (US) or Stripe (elsewhere). Payouts come every 14 days once you're over $30.

Set expectations early. Use the calculator to see what your impressions would earn. For most creators, impression payouts are a bonus on top of subscriptions, sponsorships or a product, not a salary.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get monetized on X?

It depends on your starting audience. The impressions requirement is measured over a rolling 90-day window, so even a fast-growing account needs sustained reach. Creators starting from a few hundred followers often take several months.

Can I get monetized on X without Premium?

No. Original Content Rewards requires an active Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business subscription, and Premium Basic does not qualify.

Do replies help me get monetized?

Indirectly. Impressions on replies are excluded from the 500,000-impression requirement, but good replies under bigger accounts are one of the fastest ways to gain followers who will see your own posts.

Why was my application rejected?

X doesn't always say. Common reasons are copied or aggregated content, engagement bait, automated activity, a history of rule violations or content with Community Notes. You can appeal once; after that, fix the issue and reapply in 42 days.

Is it worth it for small accounts?

Impression payouts alone are modest: at typical reported rates, 5 million impressions a month earns about $40. The program is most useful as one income stream next to subscriptions, sponsorships and your own products.
